Discover Scuba Diving / Try Dive: What to Expect

By OSEA Scuba Steve

A Discover Scuba Diving experience (try dive / bautismo / baptême / Schnuppertauchen) is a supervised first breath underwater—not a certification course. Knowing the difference keeps expectations safe and fun.

What usually happens

You get a short theory briefing, confined or sheltered water practice, and—when conditions allow—a shallow open-water dive with a professional. You will not earn Open Water certification from a single try dive.

Who it is for

Curious travellers, nervous beginners and families checking interest before committing to a full course. Medical questionnaires matter; answer honestly.

How to prepare

  • Pick a reputable centre; ask about ratios and maximum depth
  • Clear ears early and often; signal discomfort immediately
  • Equalise expectations: you are learning comfort, not independence

Next steps

If you love it, continue into an Open Water course. Use Scuba Steve’s teaching library and training articles, plan trips with the trip planner, and explore marine life later with the fish identification app.

Use this article as a learning aid. Confirm dive decisions with your training, dive computer and qualified local professionals.
